Income Transparency

I’ve been challenged by my friend and fellow author Matthew Selznick to share information about my income as an author. He makes the point that it’s helpful for other writers to get a sense of what to expect from creative endeavors and most of the numbers you see are articles about the huge success of one or two indie authors.  I find that people tend to assume that best selling authors are spectacularly rich and it’s a very glamorous life. Someone wrote a while back about the truth about his income after having a book that was a NYT best seller. I wish I could find it now. The truth is that authors don’t make much money and even the best selling authors aren’t immune. You can count on one hand, most likely, the number of authors who...

Review: A Slow, Cold Death

A Slow Cold Death by Susy Gage This book was sent to me so I could provide a prepub blurb. What does that mean? Take a look at this… Yup, that’s my name on the back of the book. You know what? It’s just about as exciting as having my name on the front of a book. This book was a lot of fun. It’s a murder mystery set in an academic university. I’ve never read a book about the crazy world of PhD researchers, though I know a little bit about it from my friends and family who are academics. The story takes place in a physics department and one of the things I most loved about it was the kooky cast of characters. Particularly Lou, who was paralyzed in a car accident fairly recently and it comes to light that his accident may not have been...

Nano-ing

Sorry you haven’t heard from me in a while! I’ve been Nano-ing like crazy and met half of my insane goal. I wrote 50,000 words in 15 days. I did not manage another 50k in the next 15 days, however. Still, I got a lot accomplished. Looking forward to polishing up what I wrote and getting it published as soon as I can. There’s a lot going on and it seems like it’s better to focus my energies on writing more stories and books and less on updating this blog. Hope I have something new to show you really soon!

Pursuing Dreams

I thought I’d share with you a little more of my personal side and some of the things going on in my life. So what’s my dream? Well, you might have guessed that it is to make a full time living as an author. Are you surprised that I’m not there yet? 🙂 I’ve got a way’s to go, actually. With a small niche like mine, I need a lot of books available for sale, since no one book is likely to be a break out hit and sell millions of copies! Clearly one of  the steps in pursuit of this dream is to write more books. Lots more books! And I’m enjoying the process of trying out new genres, new formats, new stories. I’m excited to go beyond the self-consciousness of the books about Elizabeth and explore more storytelling.  Another...

Reviews on the Horizon

I don’t have a new review for you today, but I have a couple coming up that I’m looking forward to sharing with you. 1) I’ve been asked to blurb a book. This means that I read a book before it is published and give an endorsement that the publisher can use on the front cover and in the marketing materials. I’m about half way through reading the book now and I’m really enjoying it. Will definitely be able to endorse it whole heartedly! 2) I’m hoping to get a review copy of To Hear You Smile by Gina Rossi. It’s a novella that she wrote inspired by the Paralympics. I’m not sure what to expect with it, but I’ll let you know as soon as I read it!

I’m starting to hate humanity

Is it really so bad for me to ask not to be called a freak, looked at with disgust, and compared to a pedophile? I would have thought that a person with a disability would be more understanding of how fucking hurtful it is to have someone dismiss your entire existence. I never hurt anyone. I don’t deserve to be told that the attraction that I have, that I have always behaved responsibly with, is reason for me to be hated. How dare you tell me that me defending myself is the equivalent of  a guy complaining that a woman he harassed got upset with him?  Well, this is my blog. And I’m not going anywhere. I’m here to say that I have devoteeism and I AM NOT SICK. I am very sorry for the behavior of devs who have harassed, stalked, and frightened...
