Where Has Ruth Been?
I tend to hate blogs that have apology posts about being gone for a while. Because usually I’m not a regular reader and it’s weird for me to stop by a new blog and the first thing I see is an apology about not being around. :-/ But I’ve had a lot of interesting things going on, so I wanted to talk to you guys about them. The main reason I haven’t been posting much here is that this past summer I started a publishing company. That’s right, I moved from publishing my own books to publishing other people’s too. Getting that up and running is taking a lot of my time, but it’s going to be a great benefit to you readers and writers, I think. I am specializing in publishing books with characters who have disabilities, which are...
Read MoreWorks in Progress
I thought I’d give everyone an update on what has been filling up my time lately!  Be(Longing) I’m redoing the outline for this novel about a paraplegic singer who convinces his brother to pretend to be him in order to get a record contract. I’ve written about 22,000 words, but I’m still working on bringing out Dylan’s character and getting to know him and what makes him tick. Our friends Annabelle and Lee have read portions of the rough draft and have been very encouraging, so I think it’s going to be really good once I get it finished. My plan is to get the outline reworked in January and then finish the first draft in February. Homework and...
Read MoreCharacters Acting Up
You know how writers say that their characters take on a life of their own and won’t always do what they say? That rarely happens to me. I build my plots around who the characters are and I usually am able to stick close to an outline. However. I’m having some real issues with one. Stewart’s father, Richard, is impossible to work with. People want to see Stewart and his father reconcile. I know you guys want that! I want it too. I just cannot seem to get Richard to go along with this plan. In (W)hole I gave him the opportunity at Christmas and he just belittled Stewart the way he always does. I wrote a new story with the purpose of getting them to work out their differences and yet in Stewart’s Story, even though Stewart is helping to care...
Read MoreThe Serialization Bandwagon
I’ve been seeing and hearing a lot lately about people writing serial novels and even writing episodic stories imitating the style of a TV show with seasons. I am fascinated with this form. I’m a lover of TV and lately, watching shows like, Leverage and Supernatural, which have amazing characters and strong stories, it makes me want to try it. It’s like a throw back too to the days of Dickens when it was the norm for authors to write in serial form. I had an idea for a serialized story and I’m going to give it a try during National Novel Writing Month this year. (I love NaNo for the opportunity to try new things!) If it works well, I may restructure Parallel Loves (which is currently really not working plot wise) into a serial format. I...
Read MoreFriday Excerpt: new (W)hole
I first finished (W)hole in 2009 and it quickly took on a life of its own, being the only novel of its kind. There has yet to be another book telling the inside story of what it is like to be a disability devotee. Written by a devotee for devotees and for anyone else who is curious about sexuality and what it is like to grow up with a sexual desire that frightens you. This month (W)hole transforms. It’s second edition is being published through Dev Love Press and it has gone through a series of revisions to improve it. There is now more of the male perspective, as Stewart gets more chapters in his point of view. Here is one of these new chapters… This was a mistake. Stewart pushed through a hallway thick with people, watching the ground and...
