The Next Big Thing

I usually don’t participate in chain-letter type things, but this seemed like fun and a neat way to connect authors and networks. It’s an interview about upcoming work and you get tagged for it. At the end I’ll tag five more authors to do the same interview on their blogs!

I was tagged by R.G. Porter

Due out in February 2013 (Sign up for the newsletter to get an announcement when it’s released!)

What is the working title of your book?

Parallel Loves

Where did the idea come from for the book?

The very first spark of an idea came from the experience of being a writer. I’m sure other writers will recognize this! It sometimes feels like you’re talking to people who aren’t there and they are telling you their story. Imaginary friends for adults.

So I started this story about a young woman who is seeing and talking to a man that no one else sees. But it turns out that he’s very much real. He’s from a parallel universe and she should not be able to see him. That mystery propels the story forward.

What genre does your book fall under?

I’m calling it a science-fiction romance, but it’s quite light on the science fiction (so even if you’re not into sci-fi, you’ll probably enjoy it!). It has to do with parallel universes, so that’s where the abnormal side of it comes in. But there’s no aliens or space or zombies or vampires, etc. There is a dinosaur briefly.

The focus is really the love, so it’s more a romance than anything else.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

What a fun question! Let me see. Maybe…

Talia: Sarah Carter

Trent: James McAvoy

Reece: Christian Bale

Faith: Tomiko Fraser

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

Talia may unknowingly hold the key to saving the love of her life and his family from a crumbling world.

Universe separate them, love unites them.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

It’s going to be published by a new small press that I am a founding member of:

This will be their fourth book (not counting two anthologies of stories sold for the benefit of charity).

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

That’s a difficult question, actually! I wrote one version of it many years ago when I was 18 and then last November I used NaNoWriMo to start the story over from scratch. So you could say it was one month to most of a draft, but I already had a very strong sense of the story before that.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

I think it has some of the flavor of The Time Traveler’s Wife where there’s a supernatural/science-fiction aspect, but it’s only there to enhance the feeling of the love story.

Who or What inspired you to write this book?

Despite the fantastical elements, the real heart of the story is something that I think everyone can relate to. It’s really about the emotional impact of leaving the family you were born into for the family that you create as an adult.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

There are two love stories in this book and all four characters get their perspectives shown. One of the heroes, Reece, is particularly yummy. He’s one of those quiet, brooding types and he lost a leg in a war. As stoic as he is, though, his love for Faith is powerful and they defy the strict segregation of races expected in their world. They both risk their lives to be with each other. I find it super sexy!

Thanks so much for this opportunity to talk about my new work!

    Hi, Ruth,

Interesting concept using a parallel universe. Having two love stories in the same book should be interesting. I’ll be posting mine next week.
